Summer

Every year we go to the same motel in Montauk. We've been doing this for about 9 years. It's basically just a small room on the beach that has a pool. Our room is always very worn in but comfy.
My favorite part of this whole experience is that we are all in a tiny room (db, eve, max and me) and kind of with each other all the time. We bring blow up beds (We schlep all this crap on the train as I don't drive and neither does my husband, I know really crazy). The kids get so excited and literally scream with excitement. By about the 3rd day they end up kind of squabbling and I have my "I CAN'T TAKE THIS ANYMORE" moment but Max and Db just look at each other like this to shall pass and then we get back to business of having fun.

I guess why I love this "all in one room" week is when I was growing up as a kid "Uptown" on 204th street and Vermilyea Avenue my parents were superintendents of a building. Our apartment was down this dark alley, past the garbage room, through a yard and there we were. We had 2 bedrooms and I shared a bedroom with my two brothers. My younger brother at about the age of 3 or 4 set up his bedroom under the piano in the living room. He kind of lived there. Anyway in the summer it would get so hot (I was 13 during the Summer of Sam) we would all pile into my parents bedroom as that was the only air conditioner in the apartment. We would take couch cushions, chair cushions, sheets, blankets and all just sleep around my parents queen size bed. It was dark and cold like a cave. It also felt really safe and comfy. I guess that time in Montauk kind of brings me back. I'm just glad I get to sleep in the bed now.
