Anti-Tiger Mom?

So growing up I would come to my mom and say "I want to take ballet lessons" because my friend was doing it. She took me and signed me up and I quit after the first one. Then "Mom I want to take piano". She would give me the $10 to go to the lesson and I would never show up (so busted). Then there was guitar lessons where the girl would come to my house. I learned how to play "Like a Bridge Over Troubled Waters" and called it a day. I did Irish Step Dancing Lessons blah blah blah. So basically I have no talent. My mom would have these Irish parties and all of her friends children would bring all their musical instruments and play the fiddle, the accordion, the flute you name it. . .and plus dance the irish jig like no one's business. Meanwhile mom is kind of giving me the stare like "that could be you".
Anyway I can't drive I can't swim I can't sing (I can dance. I learned from the School of Studio 54 and  Xenon's)

As you know living in NY it is super super competitive when it comes to children. Some kids I know have a lesson in something everyday after school. Which if the child really wants to do that, that is great.

We were recently invited to my son's best friends block party when we arrived they were having a talent show.  There was a child who I would say was around 7 who was playing the keyboard and it was a classical piece so intense and intricate and went on forever. He was really amazing. Meanwhile my son who is 11 has no interest in playing music, learning a language, taking tennis lessons. . .he just wants to play basketball at the Y. When I looked over at Max, my son, while this child was playing this instrument like a pro, I could only feel deep appreciation for the boy he is which is super kind, good natured and has a good sense of humor. I feel like he has already accomplished something amazing.  He is a good human being.

Max's best friend was in the talent show. I know he has a lot of talent but he chose to jump out of a tree with a huge umbrella to see if he could actually float down. He was by far my favorite act. His imagination is his talent!
